Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Let’s Go For a Ride!

Looking for some family fun this long Labor Day weekend? Why not take the family out on a bike ride, or scooter, skate, or leisurely walk? Just be sure to pack lots of water — it’s going to be hot! Here are a few suggestions of local trails, most of which are pretty easy for whatever mode of transportation you choose. Be sure to verify ahead of time that the trail is open and that it fits your family’s adventure specifications.

Rather not go out in the heat? Save this post for cooler days and take some time this weekend to fill in our Hope Survey! We want to share with our community your hope for the upcoming school year. Click here. (Check out Monday’s post for more information.)

Local Bike Trails and More:

  • The Bob Jones Trail | Always a great path for biking, walking, scooting, and skating. Bonus — it ends at Avila Beach.

  • Cloister Walk | In Morro Bay where hopefully you’ll find a cool breeze.

  • Railroad Safety Trail | An easy ride by the SLO train station. Bring your discs for some disc golf at Sinsheimer Park.

  • Morro Bay Bike Park | If you are feeling more adventurous, check out this cool bike park, built and maintained by volunteers.

  • Morro Bay Harbor Walk | Keep an eye out for otters as you enjoy the views.

  • Santa Maria Levee Trail | An easy 6.7-mile trail with beautiful views.

What’s your family’s favorite local bike path? Comment below!
