Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Together We Chalk

Happy Friday! Today our Development Assistant, Shannon DalPorto, is here to get us excited about our upcoming school fundraiser. Let’s talk chalk!

It’s hard to believe that it’s time for our kid-driven fundraiser, isn’t it? Last March, after months of careful planning and hours of work on our fundraiser, we postponed it due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year when planning our all-school fundraiser, we wanted something engaging, creative, and fun for all ages. We dreamed up a familiar idea, a Chalk Festival where students get a space, some chalk, and are off to the races! Walking down SLOCA’s hallways peering at each chalk mural sounded delightful! Our students are incredibly creative and we thought a chalk festival would be a great way to express that. We chose to make the Chalk Festival more accessible by turning it into an at-home Chalk Festival that way, anybody can participate anywhere! Students can create their own chalk murals on their driveway, sidewalk, or even on chalk-friendly paper if they prefer.

The goal of this fundraiser is to spark creativity across SLO County, hence our tag-line, “together we chalk.”

While we may be physically apart, we are never disconnected from each other. The SLOCA Chalk Festival is also a way for families to reach their Everything Counts goal and raise funds to support our school. Fundraising will occur from March 1st-20th, and on the 20th students will embark on their chalk creation at-home!

Students are encouraged to plan out their artwork ahead of time so that on March 20th, they’re ready to go! Our theme is Together, so students can tie their pieces in with that theme or they can take inspiration from the current history cycle, literature, or anything that inspires them! There are no rules in art. Take a look at this Chalk Festival for some great examples. We will create an online chalk art gallery after the event, so take pictures and share them with us! We can’t wait to see what our students create!

SLOCA families — keep an eye out for more information about the Chalk Festival coming your way soon and mark your calendars for this fun event.
