Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Manifest Destiny & Westward Expansion

Can you believe we only have a week and 1/2 left of Trimester 2? (Don’t forget Progress Reports are due!)

I (Sharon) may be dating myself, but one of my favorite memories from elementary school was going to the computer lab each week and playing Oregon Trail. I’m not sure I ever successfully made it to Oregon, either because my “family” always seemed to die of dysentery or simply because our computer period was not long enough to complete a game. Either way, I have fond memories and it really stuck with me. This week our students will be learning about Manifest Destiny, the push for westward expansion, and the Mexican-American War. Your kids can play the iconic Oregon Trail game as well. (This version is in full color! I had to explain to my kids that the version I played was just black and green.) Check out the links below and have a wonderful week as we begin to wrap up this trimester.
