Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Latin Lingo #7 & Giveaway Winner!

It is Friday and we have another Latin phrase to share with you. However, before we get to the Latin we are excited to announce that Robin Van Duren has won our Trimester Three Giveaway! This week’s Latin phrase and our character trait of the month, stewardship, go hand in hand. Read on to learn some new Latin Lingo from our UMS Latin teacher, Mrs. Sarah Weinschenk.


This Week’s Latin Phrase: Mens Sana In Corpore Sano

What does it mean?

Mens sana in corpore sano means a sound mind in a sound body.

How is it used today?

This phrase reminds us of the mind-body connection and how exercise and nutrition improve the state of our mind and allow it to be more effective. It is a good reminder to parents, students, and teachers that sometimes physical activity is needed to stimulate our intellect.

Why should we and our students be familiar with it?

Like all Latin phrases, it packs important ideas into a few words. It is fairly commonly used in speech and writing.
