Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Bring Your Parent to School

After over two years of not being able to host this event, kids and parents alike were delighted to participate in “Bring Your Parent to School!” Previously known as “Not Just for Dad’s Day,” this more straightforward moniker has the exact same purpose—to give parents the opportunity to come into the classroom and encounter a little bit of the wonder their children experience every school day. Perhaps some of you can remember a similar event when you were a kid—there is just something thrilling about your parent being in class with you!

Each track’s event began in the MPR with a yummy catered breakfast from Aloha All Seasons Catering, a welcome from Cozy Faber (Development Director), and an engaging short presentation from Lisa Ann Dillon (Director of the Lower School). Afterwards, parents were free to visit their students in their classrooms. Please enjoy some of the moments captured from the event!

“Our class had 13 parents, 14 students. We welcomed everyone in for our morning circle time and group activity. Parents joined in stretching, singing, and watching the kiddos recite the “month’s poem.” We read Salamander Room and did an art project with foil printing. It was wild and fun. I’m so glad so many parents came to enjoy our morning together. Parents were able to play outside for a little bit with their students and talk with other parents. It was great to see our little classroom community on campus.”

Chelsea Crabtree, Preschool Teacher (Track B)

“Intermediate parents joined their students in creating animal collages combined with Saint Francis. Scissors were clipping while glue was spreading. All the while, students and parents were smiling, chatting, sharing, and taking impromptu tours of the classroom. We also played an intense game of tic-tac-toe, reviewing history content. It was a delightful morning together!”

Lisa Wallace, Intermediate Teacher (Track B)

“In Primary we built scenes from our read aloud about Saint Francis of Assisi out of wood blocks. After that, we used the same blocks to play “Guess that Hamlet Scene!”

Jennifer Perneel, Primary Teacher (Track A & B)

“We did a creative adventure about Marco Polo. The students went to different stations and investigated more about his travels. We had a lot of visitors in LMS. I loved seeing dads helping their daughters color their project, parents helping their students search for more information from the beautiful books we had at the stations, and of course the joy of having your mom, dad or grandparent visit!”

Stacey Cote, LMS Teacher (Track A)

We are thrilled to share with our parents all the good, true, and beautiful that goes on at SLOCA, and what better way to show them than to invite them into the classroom so they can experience first-hand the value of the education their student is receiving at SLOCA.
