Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Semper discentes—always learning together.

Happy Friday! January will soon be over, and we are about halfway through the school year, can you believe it?

We’ve started our next literature book, Tom Sawyer, and there is some delightful artwork you can find online to go along with this classic, such as the illustration above, by Amy June Bates, as well as Norman Rockwell’s Tom Sawyer illustrations, and this gem by Howard Pyle:

Speaking of Tom and Huck and having adventures, here are a couple of weekend events happening in our area, for those of you looking for some family adventure:

The 6th Annual Model Railroad Day

A free community event that will run from 10am-4pm on January 26-27 at the historic Oceano Depot. The San Luis Obispo Model Railroad Association (SLOMRA) will display a wide variety of operating model trains and the entire Depot will be open to display its unique artifacts from Oceano and the adjacent railroad. Visit www.slomra.org or www.oceanodepot.org

Explore the Oceans Day

Saturday, Jan 26 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the San Luis Obispo Children's Museum. Cal Poly students will be sharing hands-on, ocean-themed activities. Touch, look at and learn about local tide-pool animals: sea stars, hermit crabs, sea urchins, clams, sea snails and more! Visit their site for info on hours and museum admission.

And if you haven’t visited yet, don’t forget about the Monarch Butterfly Grove in Pismo Beach. This is the perfect time of year to see the butterflies – have the kids bring their nature journals!

Whatever you choose to do this weekend, we hope you are able to unplug from the electronic devices and connect with friends and family, sharing a meaningful experience together.
