{Langston Hughes, source}
March’s poetry focus is on African American author Langston Hughes. While Hughes was a modern poet, his ability to show through his writing the black experience in America is worth our attention. Mother to Son (found on page 149 of Classic Poetry) captures the voice of a mother talking to her son in a way that transcends time and space. You can hear the hope for the future as well as the exhaustion this mother has experienced. Take some time to read some of Hughes’ other poetry here.
A captivating print anthology is available in Poetry for Young People: Langston Hughes and would appeal to Primary and up. The Dream Keeper and Other Poems is a lovely resource for Middle School and up.
During the month of March we are continuing our focus on artists Monet, Degas, or Cassatt as well as educating our ear to the music of Mozart; click on the link to watch a recent performance by the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra perform the first movement of Mozart’s No. 40 Symphony.
