Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Semper discentes—always learning together.

It’s Memorial Day weekend, and many of you will have plans to travel, go camping, head to the beach, or bbq with friends and family. Enjoy some rest and a break from the regular routine, being sure to spend some electronics-free time with loved ones.

Monday and Tuesday there is no school on campus, so use those days to catch up and for E&E. If you need an idea, there is an interesting documentary by Nova about the Wright Brothers, called Wright Brothers' Flying Machine. We will be learning a bit about the Wright Brothers as we wrap up this school year, so your kids might enjoy a film like this. It’s available on Netflix – here’s a description:

Truly, Orville and Wilbur Wright were magnificent men in their flying machine. On December 17, 1903, the brothers' long-held dream of man soaring with the birds became reality and changed the world forever. PBS television's popular “Nova” series traces the brothers' journey (from their bicycle shop in Ohio) and attempts to re-create the historic first flight using a modern-day team of pilots, historians, builders and aviation experts.

There are, of course, several local events and festivals happening this weekend, and you can find out about them on SLO County’s calendar of events website. One you might be looking forward to is the annual Strawberry Festival in Arroyo Grande on May 25-26.

Enjoy the long weekend!
