Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Summer 2013: Play – Hit the Beach

{source}

The Wednesday summer theme will be Play – ideas and activity suggestions for kid and family fun. Since we live near the ocean, today’s play tip encourages you to hit the beach! A few possibilities:

  • Try a new beach – SLOCA mom Wendy Dow (on Track A with children Chloe [Intermediate] and Jed [Primary]), has created a bingo board with 9 different beaches in our area, and is trying a new beach each week! Feel free to join her and connect with other SLOCA families.
  • Have an evening bonfire and roast hot dogs and s’mores.
  • Walk on the pier.
  • Fly a kite.
  • Hunt for shells and critters in tidepools.
  • Write giant messages in the sand.
  • Build some serious sandcastles, because Cozy Faber, our Development Director, wants you to know about something exciting happening this fall:

Summer beach time is the perfect opportunity to get your kids planning and playing in the sand. With a little research and preparation you can really create quite an amazing sculpture from sand.  We encourage you to develop your skills this summer because come fall, our students will be putting their sand expertise to work!

This October SLO Classical Academy will be participating in the construction of an Egyptian Sand City upon the shores of our stunning central coast.  Children ranging in age from three through eighteen will conceptualize, design, draft and construct historical icons out of sand as they work together supporting their school.

Here’s something to inspire us … and then here's perhaps a more realistic goal.

Many educational institutions engage their student bodies in walk-a-thon type events where kids earn financial support for their schools determined by how many laps they complete.  SLO Classical Academy prides itself on doing things differently however, and fundraising is no exception.  This fall, in conjunction with their studies of the Ancients and with the resolution of raising $35K for our priority fund, the students of SLOCA will be showing their support of their own education while they in turn call upon their personal networks to sponsor their efforts through multiple individually-affordable donations.

Start preparing for the creation of a news-worthy Egyptian Sand City by playing rigorously with your kids in the sand this summer! To brush up on your sand sculpting skills, here are a couple of youtube videos that are fun to watch and very informative: How to Build a Sandcastle, and Make a Masterpiece.

Anyone going to the beach for July 4th? Have a fun, safe, play-filled Independence Day…
