Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

SLOCA Hosts Andrew Pudewa

{source}

Today as we participate in our Back to School trainings on campus, we also want to make sure you have marked your calendars for an exceptional and exciting opportunity: Andrew Pudewa, the founder and director of the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW), is coming to SLOCA September 5-7 to speak to parents, faculty, and older students about the IEW writing process.

Whether you’ve heard Mr. Pudewa speak before, or never attended one of his seminars, you will be encouraged and inspired by his expertise, wisdom, and humor. We are thrilled to be able to host this event – you won’t want to miss it!

Through Mr. Pudewa’s rich background of homeschooling and studying the Structure and Style approach, IEW has gone from a home-grown program to a nationally recognized method of teaching writing. Thousands of parents and teachers have experienced his seminars either live or by video, and tens of thousands of children have learned to use some or all of what is taught through the IEW process. The Institute’s mission is to equip teachers and parents with methods and materials to aid them in training students to become confident and competent communicators.

Andrew’s schedule for the weekend will be as follows:

Nurturing Competent Communicators – SLOCA parents and teachers

Thursday Sept. 5, 7:00 p.m.

Structure and Style Review and Refinement – SLOCA Faculty (parents $25 each)

Friday Sept. 6, 8:30 – 12:30

High School Intensive Writing Workshop (focus on college prep.) – Any high schooler, open to the public ($50 each)

Saturday Sept. 7, 8:30 – 3:30

As home educators and parents involved in our children’s education, we greatly benefit from hearing experts in the field and receiving valuable training. We highly recommend taking advantage of the chance to hear Mr. Pudewa speak live. It will be a fantastic way to start the school year, and you will learn, grow, and have fun in the process!
