Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

What’s for Dinner: Let’s Start with Lunch

{source}

It’s “What’s for Dinner” Wednesday here at Down Home, and that means each Wednesday we will feature a recipe or food-related post that we hope will make getting dinner on the table a little easier, or at least add some variety into your routine. Feeding the family is a very real part of life, even on (or especially on) homeschooling days, so we hope to offer some inspiration and ease to the dinner hour rush. We will also include ideas for lunches, snacks, or holiday food from time to time.

If cooking isn't your thing, that's okay – you can pass these along to a friend. I (Jenny) enjoy cooking and have my own stash of tried-and-true recipes, but I love to experiment a bit too. Generally I stick to easy, nutritious meals, and while I prefer to use local and organic products, I know this isn’t always possible so feel free to substitute as necessary. I will try to include a variety of recipes here, including vegetarian options, crock-pot meals, quick recipes, and favorite family classics – if you have one you’d like to share, please email it to me and we may put it on the blog!

So… first week of school. Who’s excited about packing school lunches this year? Maybe you like to make it fun and this is totally up your alley:

But maybe it’s not.

If you’re starting the school year already out of ideas for what to pack in those school lunches, we’re here to help! Today we’re going to point you to SLOCA's Pinterest page all about Lunch Box Ideas.

We'll highlight a few pins from that page:

  • Wanting to venture a little from pb&j? Here’s a handy visual featuring different things to put on bread:

  • Charts like the following can help simplify the process, and encourage kids to pack their own lunches: (click for a larger version for printing)
