Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

It’s Friday! We hope your break so far has been full of joyful holiday preparations, good times with family and friends, and snatches of rest whenever possible.

While there are many opportunities to have fun and enjoy holiday treats and activities, if you’re looking for ways to serve others as a family this season, here are a few simple ideas from familylife.com (website contains Christian content). We are only a few days away from Christmas, but it’s not too late to include something like this in your list of holiday traditions:

  • Deliver cookies to the employees at a fire station, police station, or hospital on Christmas Day.
  • Leave a Christmas card (and perhaps a little treat) in your mailbox for the mail carrier.
  • Go caroling at a nursing home.
  • Take balloons or small gifts to the children’s ward of your local hospital. You probably won’t be able to deliver them to the children themselves due to privacy policies, but you can ask the nurses to deliver them or ask permission of the parents who happen to be present at the time.
  • Volunteer to babysit, as a family, for a couple with small children so that they can go out on a date.
  • Choose a day to serve each other inside your own home. Take out the trash for your husband, encourage your children to pick up their sibling’s toys, and show appreciation for one another.
  • Set the timer for 10 minutes. Have each person in your house go through their books and choose a few to donate to your local library (or Fred and Betty’s!).

“Happiness doesn't result from what we get, but from what we give.”

~ Ben Carson

Perhaps this weekend you’re heading to Santa’s house in the Mission Plaza, trying out the Winter WonderSLO Ice Skating Rink, enjoying Holiday Magic at the Charles Paddock Zoo tomorrow, attending the Pipe Organ Holiday Concert and Sing-Along at the PAC on Sunday, doing some last minute Christmas shopping, relaxing at home watching holiday movies and baking cookies, or trying one of the above ideas… whatever you have planned, treasure your loved ones as you spend quality time together over the next few days.

There will be no blog next week. Down Home wishes you a very Merry Christmas and will return Monday, December 30th!
