Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Friday is here, and our luxurious three week break is drawing to a close. We hope you had a chance to relax, recharge, and play together. Who’s ready to jump back into the arena on Monday? You may be excited to get back into the SLOCA routine or groaning at the thought of leaving these carefree days behind (or a little of both), so here once again is the quote used in our first parent meeting of the school year, from Teddy Roosevelt about “the man in the arena” – we hope it will re-inspire you and help ease you back into school mode:

It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.
