Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

The Resilience of Odysseus

Have your kids noticed the resilience of Odysseus in our literature reading?

“So sitting there in the midst of the feasting, and far on into the night, Odysseus told the whole story of his wanderings. He told of the Cyclops, of Circe and his voyage to the Underworld, of Scylla and Charybdis, the cattle of the Sun and the loss of his remaining ships; and how he came at last to Calypso’s island…” (Sutcliff, The Wanderings of Odysseus).

And that’s all before he returns home to find even more trouble! You’ve got to hand it to this guy, he just keeps going, recovering strength and determination in the face of seemingly endless perils and trials.

A few more inspiring thoughts on resilience to wrap up this month:

The greater the difficulty, the more the glory in surmounting it.

~ Epicurus

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit.

~ Aristotle

The difference between a strong man and a weak one is that the former does not give up after a defeat.

~ Woodrow Wilson

Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.

~ Helen Keller
