San Luis Obispo Classical Academy San Luis Obispo Classical Academy

Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

More Student Poetry

Last month we received original poems from some of our Upper Middle School students and posted a few of them on the blog. Today we have a few more to share with you. Thank you to each of the young people who contributed – we are honored that you have shared your work with us!

911

by Corey Lundeen

I can see a city in misery,

in a blink of an eye,

 many die

It is chaos, everyone is screaming and shouting

People are aching all over

everyone is there

crying on a shoulder

The smoke burns your lungs,

the victims just run and run

This can’t be real

it feels like a movie

but then you see your friends

sitting there weeping and weeping

Firefighters working all night and day,

please let some miracles come our way

Let God be with the ones who are lost

Our nation is stronger now,

and I cannot be more proud

to belong here

I love my country, yes I do,

I pledge allegiance to Red, White, Blue.

My Fairy Friend Fanny

An Alliterative poem by Shelby Dorman

I look in a pitiful puddle,

And recognize the reflection.

It’s my old fairy friend Fanny.

She lives in whatever water I see,

And in all my glamorous glass.

My inconceivable imagination wonders,

If my fairy friend Fanny is actually alive.

For at lazy lakes she walks beside me,

We even run races sometimes.

Does she live listlessly, following me?

Or am I foggily following her?

I’ll never understand the marvelous miracles,

That render my reflection so real.

These metaphysical matters are driving me mad.

So I’ll go play pretend with my fairy friend Fanny.

Saltwater

by Reece Keck

A familiar song starts playing as I start a new day

The sun is rising as I'm on my way

The crisp morning air chills me to the bone

But it is no matter I'm here, I'm home

The taste of pepper is on my tongue

The day has only just begun

Waiting in the blistering heat

the truck pulls up and we all greet

Down to the ocean we all go

There's nothing better than this, no

The cooling water is so splendid

The sun sets as this has finally ended.

Tears of Joy

by Kate Bischoff

An ordinary day with

no plot twists

Dreadfully

Boring.

Until, looking out

the foggy window

wiping away the

thin sheet of condensation

Slowly

Dripping.

Rushing out the

front door, laughing as

tears of joy fall

from the heavens

Escaping

Reality.
