San Luis Obispo Classical Academy San Luis Obispo Classical Academy

Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Semper discentes—always learning together.

Summer Fun SLOCA Style

As you make summer plans and check out various camps and opportunities for your kids, consider our amazing summer camps! You already know the quality of learning and fun that SLOCA offers, and that the teachers are fabulous… each year our summer camps get rave reviews from parents and students! This year we’ve got a fantastic lineup of camps for all ages:

Novel Adventures Summer Camps 2014

July 14-17 and July 21-24

  • 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea  (campers entering 4th through 9th grade)

Camp teachers:  Lisa Wallace and Steve Rein

Think deep-sea adventure! It begins as a mystery…there have been numerous  underwater encounters with something that no one is able to identify! Is it a whale? A shipwreck? Why is it moving? What could it be? Dive with us down to the depths of the vast ocean waters- exploring and searching as we uncover clues to solve the mystery….

We'll be doing things like making periscopes, learning what kind of ocean animals live where and in what habitats, studying the Nautilus, learning how to navigate the sea, various ocean arts and crafts, and more!

  • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz! (campers entering 1st – 4th)

Camp Teachers:  Jennifer Perneel and Sarah Root

Follow the Yellow Brick Road with us this summer as we adventure into the world of Oz.  Join us for all sorts of summer fun – a rainbow treasure hunt, tornado science experiment, creating wands and characters, yellow brick road game, and special activities and challenges to earn a brain, heart and courage medals.

  • Preschool Fairytale Camp with Mrs. Eades

For campers 3 year old (must be potty-trained) to entering K.

The Hanging Lantern Review Summer Writers' Workshop!

July 28 – August 1

Hanging Lantern Review, San Luis Obispo County's first student-led literary magazine, will be hosting an intensive writers' workshop for high school students and recent graduates. If you love creative writing, get serious about it this summer and take some time to improve your craft in fiction and poetry!

Last summer's Novel Adventures and Hanging Lantern Review Writers' Workshops were a blast.  Over three weeks our students played, discovered, created and had an amazing time while they also learned all sorts of skills.  Here are a few more photos from last summer’s camps:
