Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Character Trait for September 2014: Kindness

{source}

Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.

~Aristotle (384-322)

At SLO Classical Academy, we strongly believe that a worthy education requires the development of character as well as the mind. Each month during the school year we emphasize one of our twelve SLOCA Character Traits (see the Parent Handbook on our website’s parent resources page for a complete list of these traits). Here at Down Home, we hope to inspire you each month with a few quotes, photos, or ideas that relate to our character trait of the month, and we welcome your suggestions!

Let’s encourage each other to discuss these virtues in our homes, to look for them in our history and literature readings, and to actively seek to nurture them in ourselves and in our kids as we go about daily life.

The first character trait we will focus on this year is Kindness:

Recognizing that relationships are core to who we are becoming, and therefore being tender, courteous, helpful, forgiving and compassionate towards others and self. Looking for the goodness in all. Being unselfish and generous.

For each character trait we also have a catch phrase, which is a simple and straightforward saying you can use to help everyone remember the trait and work on it, if you want to. The catch phrase for kindness is: Be nice. (Pretty simple, right?)

The start of this new school year affords plenty of opportunities to practice kindess as we get to know new teachers, welcome new students, and share our campus with a new school.

Kindess at home is important too! Here’s a pdf we posted a couple of years ago and it’s worth sharing again. This creative and thoughtful list of ways to be kind to your child is a great reminder to keep on hand, and the suggestions will be as much fun for you as they are for them. We all know the best way to teach character is to model it ourselves, so print out this pdf and enjoy showing kindness to your kids:

Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for a kindness.

Kind words can be short and easy to speak but their echoes are truly endless.
