Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Semper discentes—always learning together.

A Treasure Trove on Campus

Here’s a quick parent testimonial from Track B mom Joy Erb about a pretty fantastic resource that’s right under our noses:

Have you discovered SLOCA’s fabulous library? It's so convenient to use before and after school, no fees for late books (at least not yet!) and you just know that every book you pick up is  going to be a quality read.

After soaking in The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease this summer, I got inspired to double the time I read aloud to my kids. Having the SLOCA library accessible to us has really made this goal possible. I check out 2-3 new books each day I'm at school and keep them in a book basket in my car. This way we can redeem our car time through reading. Every minute counts, so have good books on hand and be ready!

Thanks, Joy – we love your suggestions! It can be easy to forget that we have access to so many great books right here on campus. Whether for read-alouds or for independent reading, there are plenty of quality choices for every age.  And what a great idea to make our small but richly filled library a regular part of the drop off/pick up routine!
