Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Magical Moments: Beowulf Recitations

{photos by Jenny Curzan}

Happy November! Today’s Magical Moment goes back several weeks, but was just too fun to pass up. Back when we were reading Beowulf, our Lower Middle School students each selected a section of the poem to recite to the class.  Some even chose to stand on top of a chair or table to enhance the performance, as the students drank mead together and enjoyed the entertainment, much like in Hrothgar’s hall.

Track B mom Jenny Curzan happened to be in Mrs. Wright’s classroom that day, and took a few photos to share this memorable classroom experience with us. She remarked that she was amazed by each student’s poise and confidence while speaking in front of a group. How many of us adults wish we’d had that? Because recitation and public speaking are woven throughout our program, our kids become comfortable with it. Though they may not recognize it yet, they are receiving a valuable lifelong gift that will serve them well no matter what their futures hold.

This is happening regularly at every level, but since we have a few photos of this day, enjoy – it’s always fun to see what’s going on in the classrooms:

And here's one from Mr. Stavros' class:

Parents and teachers, if you happen to get any photos of a special in-class activity, we’d love to share it on the blog! Please email Down Home and tell us about it.
