Greetings! As we head into the weekend, we hope you're planning to come on Monday evening to our family business meeting and potluck dinner, starting at 6:00 pm at Grace Church in SLO. If you haven't signed up yet to bring a dish, please do so! Here's the potluck sign-up. Check out the “Always Mindful” section of last week's update (January 12th) for 3 Good Reasons to Prioritize the Family Business Meeting.
Today is “Free Friday” which means we hope you’ll be able to schedule in some time over the weekend to hang out with your family free from technology, or at least free from individual devices captivating everyone’s attention. It takes hard work and determination to make this a habit, but it’s such a great way to honor and develop the relationships you care most about.
We do have a “Food for Thought” article to pass along as well. Although we are more than halfway through the month of January, it’s not too late to make New Year’s resolutions (or at least to enjoy reading about other people’s New Year’s resolutions!).
So today we share a fun and interesting article from Brain Pickings that features resolutions from many prominent thinkers, most of whom you will recognize – Seneca, Thoreau, Benjamin Franklin, and even Carol Dweck (Mindset) plus several others:

If you want to catch a SLOCA Grizzlies basketball game this weekend, or anytime in the remaining season, check the latest weekly update for schedules. Our athletes would love to see you come out and support them!
And finally, here are a few other family-friendly events happening in SLO County this weekend:
- Visit the Monarch Butterfly Grove in Pismo Beach – Every winter, between November-February, thousands of beautiful orange and black monach butterflies can be seen clustering in the eucalyptus and cypress trees at the Monarch Butterfly Grove. Docents are available from 10am-4pm daily, and talks are given at 11am and 2pm.
- 1st Annual Tamale Festival in Atascadero – Saturday, January 23, 12-4 pm. This event will feature a variety of food, music and fun for the whole family to enjoy, along with freshly made tamales for purchase to eat at the park or to take home.
- Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat – Sunday, January 24, 3 pm. Presented by Cal Poly Arts, here’s a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon with younger children if you’re willing to pay for tickets.
Today's THE day (as in the last day) for 7th-12th graders to submit a piece to the Hanging Lantern Review! Click here for the details. We are so excited for the upcoming issue! Here's this year's Hanging Lantern Review staff:
