Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

End of Year Reflection

It’s the end of the year already! How did time fly by so fast? When I (Wei) was asked to reflect upon the 2021-2022 school year, I couldn’t have imagined that we would have been able to do all of these things given the past two years. As a parent going ‘behind the scenes’ for the first time, I can also say that this community does so many things that are crafted with the utmost care and consideration that it’s a wonder how everything gets done so serenely! Read on for a brief retrospective on all the things that happened this year.

We started out 2021 still having lingering effects of the pandemic, but with the hope that things would be getting better and heading towards normalcy rather than the other way around. As a parent, I was grateful that we were able to have school as much as normal, and even gathering outside for morning meetings as a community in the early morning sun was good for the soul. It was also good to be able to see families in the breezeways at drop off and pick up, and have the little chats in The Den or outside the Library.

This year we were also able to have so many of the community events that we missed out on the previous years in person – History Experience(s), Wax Museum, Recitation nights, Grizzly Athletics, Taste of the Vine benefit, Drive-Thru BBQ benefit, Kid Driven Fundraiser, Enjoy the Ride Mini-Retreat, Family Business Meeting. All of these gave us hope that we were returning to the special community that SLOCA is, and what it once was.

SLOCA passed WASC with flying colors, thanks to the many, many hours that the staff put in, while also rising to the challenge of squeezing a new and robust full-time program on campus.

The ‘ride’ this year has been great, but still a little challenging for those who have missed out on some special things like the full offering of all the High School sports, Grand Days, and Parties for a Purpose. Yet, as we look forward to summer and the start of a new school year, it feels like the train is back on track and the ride from here will be even smoother. Happy Summer!

As we come to the end of another school year, we hope the Down Home blog has been useful to you! Please share in the comments section if there is anything different you would like to see on the blog. We would love to hear from you!
